OCD…………

By · Comments (1)

My latest bout of OCD has now kicked in !  After my visit to PDG and the removal of the hat rack, I noticed how grubby the hidden areas of the JetBox are. As a pilot you don’t get to see these areas and also because I traditionally pilot the machine I don’t see the state of the passenger compartment. Also as the aircraft is, after all, over 20 years old you come to accept that it’s not quite in perfect condition. However with some TLC it can actually be improved to a much better standard. (In truth, the JetBox is in bloody great shape for a machine that’s 24 yrs old. Particularly as it is a very low time aircraft). Read More→

Water in the engine bay

………I’d probably disown it, but as a helicopter owner you don’t often have a lot of choice. You learn to be that bit more tolerant and patient particularly when they don’t behave as they should. My latest snag (and thankfully I don’t have many) has left us a little perplexed and, as I write, remains un-resolved.

After my major overhaul, the Jetbox requires some inspections to ensure that all the work completed remains intact. The tail rotor drive shaft for instance requires an inspection to see if the retaining bolts have loosened. I therefore scheduled a trip down to PDG in order that they could conduct the inspection. We’ve had a lot of rainfall in the last week and after my failed attempt to get the JetBox indoors, she had sat outside, and although partially covered, she was a little damp. I didn’t however expect to find a small swimming pool in my engine compartment. The photo on the left shows how deep it was. (Look at the water line indicated by the red arrow.) I deduced that the drain tube that sits at the bottom of the tray had become blocked but I was confident that it would disperse when she was fired up.  I was scheduled to travel to PDG anyway, so I wasn’t to concerned, particularly as John Wesley had confirmed my suspicions and further suggested that they would fire compressed air through the drain when I arrived. Nothing ventured………

By · Comments (0)

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Or so the saying goes. I only wish it hadn’t cost me a couple of grand in the process but “hey ho”. Since my recent overhaul I have wanted to try to store the JetBox indoors during periods of inclement weather. As I fly regularly, it needed to be easy access, and preferably on the airfield also. Fortunately Phil Robinson had some spare capacity in his hangar and was able to let me utilise that for storage of my baby. So, with storage sorted, I began to make enquiries about a landing platform, as I’d pretty much ruled out a Heli mover, because they are far too expensive for me to justify.

My enquiries uncovered a company in Holland who manufactured them and would deliver to the UK for approximately £7,500. Thanks, but no thanks – I was going to need a quad bike or something to move the chopper so that was going to be upwards of £1,000 too so that whole proposition was way too expensive. Read More→

I’ve had good use out of the Jetbox this week including a full weekend away in the South beginning with a trip down to near Elstree for a business meeting and then an evening meal with my stepson and his wife. I’m grateful to some new friends, Mark and Mandy, who kindly allowed me to turn their beautiful home into a heliport for the weekend.

On Saturday I went (by car) white water rafting at the Lee Valley White Water Rafting Centre which is the venue being used for the Olympics.  This is an awesome day, not to be missed when it re-opens to the public after the games next year. Yes – you get wet. Very wet. Sunday saw us commute the short distance across to Reading where I had a meeting on Monday morning with a client but also allowed us to visit my sister in law who lives close by. Read More→
